Canada commonly uses CSA Z94.3, while Australia and New Zealand use AS/NZS 1337.1. The importer should confirm the current national route rather than assuming one certificate transfers between markets.

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is a performance and marking standard, not a universal commercial license. A compliant product must meet the relevant construction, optical, and impact requirements for its claimed use, and the markings must correspond to the tested configuration. In the United States, OSHA recognizes certain consensus standards for occupational eye protection, but the employer still has to select protection suitable for the hazard. Buyers should retain test evidence, product specifications, and supplier declarations rather than relying only on an ANSI reference printed in a quotation.

Testing only an unmounted lens does not establish that the finished prescription protector performs as claimed. The lens, frame, mounting method, side protection, and prescription geometry can affect impact performance. Relevant standards generally assess the complete protective product or defined components in specified configurations. A buyer should request reports identifying the exact frame model, lens material, lens thickness or prescription range, coatings, and assembly method. Substituting a different frame or lens power after testing may require an engineering review or additional testing.

Markings are useful evidence but are not proof by themselves. For US products, ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 marking conventions distinguish protective eyewear and impact performance, with markings placed on the lens, frame, or both as required by the product type and standard edition. Prescription products may use different marking formats from plano products. The mark should match the model and test documentation, remain legible, and be supported by a supplier declaration or technical file. Buyers should also check manufacturer identification, standard edition, product limitations, and traceability information.

Tint, polarization, or UV filtering does not make ordinary prescription sunglasses protective eyewear. Compliance depends on impact resistance, retention, coverage, optical quality, frame construction, and the specified hazard class. Adding a prescription lens to a fashion frame can change its performance and may invalidate prior testing. A conversion is credible only when the finished configuration is designed and assessed under the relevant protective-eyewear standard. Buyers should not use ordinary sunglasses for industrial hazards unless the complete product carries appropriate compliance evidence.

Request documents that identify the legal manufacturer, exact model, standard and edition, test methods, sample configuration, results, limitations, and report date. Check whether the testing organization is competent for the stated scope, preferably through an accreditation directory such as an ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation database. For EU PPE, verify the EU declaration of conformity and, where the risk category requires it, the notified-body documentation and ongoing conformity route. Compare markings and production samples against the reports, and ask how design changes, prescription ranges, and replacement components are controlled.
